Author Interview: Poor Attitude by P.J. DeVere

Pour Attitude

by P.J. DeVere

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Madeline Everly wants to climb her muscular bartender like a mountain, but he seems opposed to the idea. After she starts working alongside him behind the bar, will he finally give into her?

When Madeline’s misogynistic boss, overbearing mother, and grudge holding sister become too much to bear, it’s time to let off a little steam. Mads has a wild streak, and she doesn’t apologize for it. She likes men, and she has her sights set on one in particular—Exel Kinley. If she can check him off her to-do list, maybe he won’t take up so much room in her head. As nothing in her life has ever been permanent, Mads has no problems going through men like she goes through gin and tonics at happy hour. Can she have the adventure she wants and the pleasure she craves, all from the same man?

  1. You probably get asked this one a lot – but I still want to know, if you were given a hot tub time machine – when would you go?
I would love to experience the Roaring 20s (but dip out before the whole Great Depression thing), so I’d head to New York in the mid 1920s first. Next, because I’m a fan of the show Outlander, I’d probably head to Scotland 200 years ago and look for my own hot Scot.
  2. What is your favorite genre to read?
Romance! It’s what led me to writing in this genre. I’m a prosecutor in my day job, and I love to come home and curl up with a good love story. It keeps me balanced and happy.
  3. Describe your writing area – is it neat and organized or a mess of notes and bits of paper everywhere?
I have a home office set up and ready for me, but I tend to write curled up on the couch. I will often have a glass of wine or something like that beside me, and maybe a notebook. It’s pretty tidy despite the random Dorito crumb.
  4. Some of my favorite authors (indie) are incredibly active on social media – what is your footprint like? Do you like interacting with your fans or is it too distracting when it comes to your writing?
I try to interact with my fans in some way every week. I love to hear from them and how passionate they can be about the characters in my books. I have a website as well as a presence on most all social media platforms.
  5. Who is your favorite book character? Why?
Madeline in Pour Attitude is currently my favorite. She is a direct, no nonsense gal who has a wild spirit. She doesn’t like to be held down or told what to do. She is a bold, beautiful woman with a heart of gold.
  6. I really like this question – because I love casting my favorite books with current celebs. If your book would be made into a movie, which celebs would you cast in it?
I have secret Pinterest boards for all my characters. It helps me visualize who they are and how they’d react in certain situations.
I have always seen Mads as Ashley Benson from Pretty Little Liars (but not the same personality as her character on the show). A broody Joe Manganiello would be my top pick for Exel.
  7. What were your highest and lowest points when writing this book?
I inject a lot of sarcasm and humor into my books, so my high points are always when I crack myself up. Usually, I grab my phone to read the scene to my sister right after I finish it to see if it makes her howl with laughter as well. There wasn’t a low point, per se, but I was more anxious about writing this book than my others because I love these characters so much and wanted to do them justice. I’m very proud at the finished product!
  8. If you could collaborate with any author (alive / dead) who would it be and why.
The answer might surprise you, but I’d collaborate with John Grisham. We’re both Ole Miss Law grads, and I think the combination of legal thriller with an equal amount of romance could turn into something amazing.
  9. I am a HUGE fan of audio books. I love being able to carry on with my current read in progress even when driving or working. Have you ever had any of your books made into an audio book? If not – is it something you would want to do?
Yes! Pour Choices and Pour House are both available in audiobook! Isabelle Ruther and Brandon Utah narrated them beautifully, and I hope you check them out. Each book in The Starkford Series can be read as a standalone, so you can read them in order or pluck one up randomly. I plan to have Pour Attitude put into an audiobook, but it is not in the works just yet.
  10. Lastly but definitely not least. Looking back at 6-year-old you – would they be disappointed in what you decided to do with your life?
Six-year-old me would love the current me. I’ve been a teacher, and now I’m an attorney and author. I have an awesome husband and wonderful sons, and we love to travel every chance we get. I try and make my life full of adventure whether its academically, globally, or in fiction. Six-year-old me would ask why I didn’t become an actress like she had planned, but I think she’d be good with the rest.

Thanks to P.J. De Vere for taking the time to answer my questions!

P.J. DeVere is the author of The Starkford Series. She was born and raised in Mississippi, where she is still a practicing attorney. A life-long lover of books, P.J. finds it hard to tear herself away from a steamy romance novel. She’s had multiple careers in her life, but writing is by far her favorite. Before earning her law degree from Ole Miss, she was a fifth-grade teacher. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Mississippi State.

She is a wonderful wife, a terrible housekeeper, and a devoted mother. Her sons are all grown with lives of their own, and she is making use of this newfound time and freedom to get to know the imaginary friends in her head. She is giving readers a distinctly different view of life in the South as not everyone down here spits tobacco through a missing tooth hole or says “I declare” while lazily fanning herself under a magnolia tree. P.J. has found joy in creating a series of novels that reflects the Mississippi she knows and loves, and she hopes her readers will find the lure of returning to Starkford as irresistible as she does.
