“Sailing – and the freedom of the ocean. Do you have any experience on the ocean and if so where did you get it?”

My experience isn’t anything at all like Adrian Tate’s, the hero in Rogue Wave. Tate spent over ten years out on the ocean, and he’s inspired by the nonfiction book The Outlaw Ocean and Ian Urbina’s reporting for the New York Times.

I do have a lot of experience on Haven Island (aka Bald Head Island, NC). We visit every summer, and one day I dream of owning a place on the island. My husband and I were married on the island, as were my brother and his wife. I have a lot of family that don’t live on the island, but live nearby. I grew up going out for short fishing trips on the ocean with my parents near Morehead, NC. I can’t say I enjoy fishing (I’d really rather not kill any animal- and, I get seasick the moment I can’t see land- so, yeah, I’m not at all like Tate) but I’ve always harbored a love for the ocean and the sand in my toes. For me, a summer isn’t a summer without time at the beach.
